Story Contest - Sample Story 3!
Here is the final sample story for our Me Make Monster Story Contest (Deadline: December 1st, 2009) where you make a monster, then write its story! Winners get Zazzle gift certificates - $50 for first place in four age groups, $25 for second and third place! Pretty sweet, right?!
We've enlisted three young people to create some sample monsters and stories for us. So we now hand the reins of this blog over to to Gabe Santos (age 12) and his creature creation... Count Von Rynn!
When the world was young, Count Von Rynn was already ancient. Once human, the man then known as the benevolent Count of the land of Kavekystaan was a kind ruler, treating his citizens with respect. Then his youngest son, visiting a foreign land, was caught stealing fruit for his wife. He was sentenced to death.
Count Von Rynn begged the king of this land to release his son, but the king would not give in. So the Count went to the dungeon of his castle and found a man who had been imprisoned thirty years ago for practicing The Blaque Magycks. Count Von Rynn asked this man if he could help. The man, who called himself Jakryll, agreed, and cast a spell on The Count that gave him the ability to fly to his son, honing in on his thoughts.
Once he arrived, however, The Count learned that Jakryll, who was angry at being imprisoned in the dungeon for so many years, had tricked him. He cursed him into becoming a brutal monster. His teeth turned to fangs, and his eyes had an evil gaze. When Count Von Rynn saw his son, he became filled with a ravenous appetite and couldn't control himself. His son screamed, but The Count tore into him. When he was done, all that was left were the son's clothes and rings.
The Count was enraged and wanted to find the king so he could destroy him for making him do that to his son. He ran through the kingdom, eyes yellow as the moon, dispatching all the palace guards and villagers that got in his way. Finally he got to the king, who begged for his life - but Count Von Rynn wasn't listening. Soon the king was no more.
The Count returned home, but was doomed to live a life as a monster. He found a suit and cape to remind him of his human self, but it only makes him despair. He hopes to someday find Jakryll and convince him - one way or another - to lift the curse and make him a man again.

We've enlisted three young people to create some sample monsters and stories for us. So we now turn this blog post over to D.D. McFarlane (age 9) and her monster creation... Gorgalus!
Gorgalus comes from the swamps of Arkansas, making him one of the few southern monsters. He was accidentally created when a swamp witch was trying to cast a spell on her cat, but she missed and hit a toad outside her window instead. The toad became an enormous amphibious beast named Gorgalus. Unfortunately Gorgalus ate the witch, but he let her cat go free because he felt sorry about the way the witch treated it over the years.
Even though Gorgalus is always hungry, he doesn't eat any of the animals in the swamp. He's a vegetarian (the witch was an exception). Instead, he eats the leftover junk food that clogs up the creeks. The snakes, birds, spiders and other swamp creatures accept Gorgalus, even though he smells like sewers and makes big bubbles under the water when he gets upset. In return, he protects the animals from shady land developers and snooping sheriffs.
Gorgalus has spikes on his arms and legs that let him defend himself against any weapons like machetes and spears. He can make a deep, gurgling sound that summons the swamp animals to his aid (they don't mind helping, anyway). He must always protect his throat, though, because if it gets hurt, he can't make the sound, and then he'd be in big trouble.
Gorgalus just wants to live in peace, and be happy.

To give you an idea of what kind of story you can write, we've enlisted three young people to create some sample monsters and stories for us. So we now turn this blog post over to young Curt Jacinelli (age 5) and his monster creation... Rabid Roderick!
My monster is named Rabid Roderick. Rabid Roderick is covered in red fur, but he wears dark clothes to cover it, so he can blend into the world better.
Rabid Roderick is actually a man named Sir William Anderson, a famous scientist who works in a laboratory in London, England. Sir William was trying to find a cure for people getting sick when he created a new potion. He didn't want to make anyone sicker, so he tested it on himself. Something went wrong, and now he becomes Rabid Roderick whenever he sees the color red. He can't control himself when he's Rabid Roderick - it just takes over. He turns back when he finally sees the color green.
Rabid Roderick is very bendable and can squeeze himself into sewers. This is what he does when he is pursued by cops and television reporters who want to catch a glimpse of him. He searches all over London, trying to get the ingredients for an antidote that will cure him. He can also use his arms and legs to swing high up on buildings or other structures, which he does to try to find the scattered ingredients for the antidote.
Someday, he will find them and cure himself.
